Scratching Pimple Leads to 'Little Cauliflower' Wart, Doctor Warns

A dermatologist is urging the public to refrain from scratching pimples or itchy skin, emphasizing that doing so can create open wounds and increase the risk of infection. Dr. Wu Ren-chin shared the case of a woman in her 40s who developed a rough, raised bump on her forehead. Initially, she thought it was a common pimple and scratched it, causing a small wound.

When skin appears with pimples or itchiness, you should try to avoid doing one thing, to prevent forming wounds and increasing the chance of infection.

This wound, Dr. Wu explained, likely served as an entry point for the human papillomavirus (HPV), leading to the development of a viral wart. Many people associate HPV and viral warts with genital infections, often referred to as "cauliflower" due to their appearance. However, Dr. Wu clarified that viral warts can appear on various parts of the body, including the face, hands, and feet, and are not solely linked to sexual activity. The term "cauliflower" is specifically used when the warts appear in the genital area.

Many people hear HPV, viral warts, and immediately think of cauliflower growing in private parts. In fact, viral warts do not only grow in 'parts that cannot be spoken of,' they can also appear on the face, hands, and soles of the feet, which is completely different from improper behavior.

Dr. Wu further elaborated that the treatment for viral warts depends on their size and location, with options including cryotherapy, electrocautery, or topical medications. He stressed that addressing the issue early generally results in a smaller affected area and a less demanding treatment course.
