Search Underway for Four-Year-Old Boy After Car Plunges Into Río Negro Canal

A four-year-old boy was missing after the car carrying him and his parents fell into an irrigation canal in Fernández Oro, Río Negro. The accident occurred in the area known as Puente de Hierro, and authorities believed the current may have carried the child away.

The search began early Saturday and focused near kilometer 1209 of Route 22. Prosecutors, the Argentine Naval Prefecture, Río Negro police, Civil Defense personnel and divers joined the operation. Teams searched from both banks of the canal, while divers and boats worked in the water.

The boy’s parents managed to reach safety on their own. The car remained partly submerged and was covered by vegetation. Authorities had not established why the driver lost control.

The report also recalled a similar accident in Río Negro on Jan. 1, 2026, when a one-year-old baby died after a car carrying the child and the parents overturned into an irrigation canal in Chimpay.
