Search underway for missing person in Viștea dam; two rescued

Emergency services, including firefighters and rescuers, are actively searching for an adult who disappeared in the waters of the Viștea dam in Brașov County on Sunday, June 28. The incident prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies.

During the operation, two people, an adult and a minor, were successfully pulled from the water. Both were conscious and received on-site medical evaluations. A SMURD helicopter was deployed to survey the area, supported by inflatable boats and a SMURD crew. Divers from ISU Sibiu and ISU Covasna have been requested to assist, and water discharge from the dam has been temporarily halted to aid the search efforts.

Following initial medical assessments, the minor did not require hospitalization. The adult, however, was transported to a medical facility in Făgăraș for further examination. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with the Salvamont Brașov team utilizing sonar and an underwater drone to scan the vicinity and support the intervention.

In response to the incident, authorities have issued crucial safety recommendations to the public. They urge individuals to swim only in designated areas, avoid entering rivers with steep banks and strong currents, and never swim alone if unable to do so. Recommendations also include staying close to the shore if one cannot swim, avoiding cold water after prolonged sun exposure, refraining from jumping from structures, and never leaving children unsupervised near water. The authorities emphasized the dangers of swimming in unequipped locations, citing unpredictable currents, unknown depths, submerged obstacles, lack of lifeguards, potential water contamination, and cold water temperatures that can cause thermal shock.
