Second National Drill: earthquake scenario for each region and how to register your property

Mexico’s second National Drill will take place nationwide on September 19 at noon, with authorities using five hypothetical earthquake scenarios tailored to different regions.

The exercise, organized by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and the National Civil Protection Coordination, aims to strengthen public response habits and test the emergency protocols of internal protection units and brigades. Public and private institutions have been invited to participate.

In the Central Zone, the scenario involves a magnitude 7.7 earthquake centered in Tehuacán, Puebla, at a depth of 67 kilometers. The participating states include Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Puebla, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Colima and Guanajuato.

The Northwest scenario is a magnitude 7.1 earthquake 26 kilometers southeast of Mexicali, Baja California, at a depth of 30 kilometers. Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Sonora and Sinaloa will take part.

The Northeast will use a magnitude 5.2 scenario centered eight kilometers west of Allende, Nuevo León, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The participating states are Aguascalientes, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas.

The Yucatán Peninsula scenario is a magnitude 7.0 earthquake 110 kilometers northeast of Cabo Catoche and Isla Contoy in Quintana Roo, at a depth of 15 kilometers. Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán will participate. In the Gulf of Tehuantepec, the scenario is a magnitude 7.6 earthquake 75 kilometers southwest of Tonalá, Chiapas, at a depth of 22 kilometers, involving Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabasco.

People can register their property free of charge through the online portal enabled by the Mexican government. The registration covers homes, buildings, schools, museums, daycare centers, workplaces and offices.
