Senate approves Trump's pick for intelligence chief

Jay Clayton has been confirmed as the United States' new intelligence chief by the Senate, a move announced by President Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump had nominated Clayton for the post, praising him as "exceptional" and predicting he would "do a fantastic job."

The confirmation passed with 51 senators voting in favor and 47 against, establishing a permanent leader responsible for coordinating the nation's extensive intelligence services. Clayton succeeds the acting director, Bill Pulte, who was a loyal supporter of Trump but whose nomination had raised concerns due to a lack of relevant experience. Democrats initially viewed Clayton as a more conventional choice compared to Pulte. However, during his confirmation hearings, he faced pointed questions from the opposing party.

Clayton's background includes previous leadership roles at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and service as a federal prosecutor.
