Senate Rejects Proposal to Make Serbian Studies Faculty Part of Niš University

The Senate of the University of Niš rejected a proposal to incorporate the Faculty of Serbian Studies into the university, N1 reported, citing unofficial information.

Students and citizens applauded and cheered Senate members outside the room, where they were allowed to enter. The Senate was meeting to decide whether the new faculty should become part of the University of Niš.

The Serbian government began the process in October 2025 to separate the Faculty of Philosophy’s history, Serbian studies, and Russian language and literature departments and connect them with the new Faculty of Serbian Studies. Employees and students at the Faculty of Philosophy largely opposed the separation, arguing that the procedure was unlawful and politically motivated.

The Administrative Court suspended enforcement of Education Ministry decisions that changed the Faculty of Philosophy’s operating permits. In practice, that restored the previous arrangement while the court case continues: the Faculty of Philosophy regained permission to operate the affected programs, while the Faculty of Serbian Studies was temporarily denied an operating permit.
