Senator Wadada Clinches Nasarawa APC Governorship Ticket

Senator Ahmed Wadada has emerged as the governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria's Nasarawa State, following his victory in the party's primary election held across the state on Friday.

Wadada, who currently represents the Nasarawa West Senatorial District, triumphed over six other contenders in the election. The primary was conducted across all 147 electoral wards within the state's 13 local government areas. The results were announced late Friday night in Lafia by Theodore Maiyaki, the Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee.

According to the official tally, Wadada garnered an impressive 195,285 votes. Trailing behind him was former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu, who received 39,675 votes. Other aspirants included Professor Mohamed Sani-Haruna with 5,844 votes, Hassan Liman (a Senior Advocate of Nigeria) with 863 votes, Zakka Yakubu with 336 votes, Fatima Abdullahi-Adamu with 246 votes, and Tanimu Adabson with 65 votes.

Maiyaki affirmed that the election process, including accreditation and result collation, adhered to transparency standards and complied with the party's constitution and electoral guidelines. "Having satisfied the requirements of the APC constitution and electoral guidelines, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada is hereby declared winner and returned elected as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Nasarawa State," he declared.

Wadada's nomination follows an endorsement from the incumbent Governor Abdullahi Sule, who publicly declared his support for the senator on April 16. Following the endorsement, Wadada characterized the governor's backing as "a call to higher service." The primary election itself was preceded by significant internal party discussions regarding zoning and primary methods, with stakeholders ultimately opting for direct primaries over consensus arrangements. Notably, one of the defeated aspirants, Hassan Liman, had stated prior to the election that he would not withdraw from the race despite the governor's endorsement of Wadada. The outcome is seen by political observers as consolidating Governor Sule's influence within the Nasarawa APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
