Senegal Local Elections: President Faye Appears Unprepared

Senegal faces an uncertain electoral calendar as local officials' terms are set to expire in January, with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye yet to sign the decrees needed to launch the process.

The opposition is actively pressing for the elections to proceed as scheduled, emphasizing the need for timely democratic exercises. However, statements from within the presidential camp have introduced ambiguity. Aminata Touré, a leader in President Faye's newly formed party, suggested that the head of state has "the entire year 2027" to organize these elections. These remarks have intensified speculation about a potential postponement.

This delay is interpreted by some as President Faye needing time to solidify his new political party, Kiiraay, or "The Republican Patriots." Engaging in local elections before establishing a strong base could be politically risky, especially given the fractured relationship with his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, who now leads the PASTEF party and has a significant presence in the National Assembly.
