Senegal's President Faye launches new party, splitting from PASTEF

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially launched his new political party, KIIRAAY, also known as The Republican Patriots. This move marks a significant split from his former party, PASTEF (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity), and signals a departure from his mentor, Ousmane Sonko.

The launch has already seen a notable influx of militants, not only from PASTEF but also from other political formations. This migration is attributed by some to the allure of potential government positions and financial incentives, a common dynamic in African politics where conviction can sometimes take a backseat to promises of power and wealth. Faye's ability to draw supporters suggests he wields considerable influence, leveraging his presidential position to attract new members.

However, Faye's decision to break away from PASTEF is fraught with risk. While he has engineered a major schism within his former party, the ultimate success of this move remains uncertain.
