Senior Malaysian Opposition Figure Rais Yatim Stripped of Royal Titles Amidst Palace Crisis

Senior opposition figure Rais Yatim has lost his royal titles in Negeri Sembilan, a move by the state's ruler, Muhriz Munawir, that strips him of honors just days before a crucial state election. The decision, announced on July 30, comes after revelations that Yatim, a former Negeri Sembilan chief minister, had secretly advised the state's chieftains, known as Undang, during a prolonged palace crisis.

According to sources close to the palace, Yatim's actions against the throne have been ongoing since at least 2022. These include encouraging one Undang to style himself as "Sultan" and, more recently, proclaiming Muhriz's cousin, Nadzaruddin Ja’afar, as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar (state ruler) on June 5, 2026. Both actions are considered treasonous by some within the royal court.

The revocation of Yatim's two royal titles is a rare and serious step, with one palace adviser drawing a parallel to the stripping of titles from former Prime Minister Najib Razak following his corruption conviction. Yatim, who presents himself as an expert in Negeri Sembilan's customary law, has been advising the Undang throughout the current palace crisis, which began in April. The Undang hold significant powers, including electing the state ruler and initiating inquiries to dismiss the sovereign.

The palace crisis has had significant political ramifications, contributing to the dissolution of the state legislature and the calling of a snap election. The ruling coalition's support was withdrawn after the state chief minister's administration was seen as interfering in royal affairs. Yatim, now chairing a party within the opposition Perikatan Nasional coalition, is a prominent figure in this racially charged election campaign.
