Sentencing demand revealed for Retired Admiral Türker Ertürk

An indictment has been prepared against retired Admiral Türker Ertürk, who faces a potential prison sentence of two to six years. Ertürk was arrested on August 17 after an investigation was launched into statements he made during a television program.

The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated the investigation, citing Ertürk's remarks, which were later re-shared on social media. The indictment alleges that Ertürk committed the crime of "threatening the public through press and broadcasting channels with the aim of creating fear and panic."

Ertürk's lawyer, Ayhan Yıldızel, has criticized the arrest and subsequent indictment. Yıldızel stated that his client was detained due to comments made on a television program on March 20, 2023. The lawyer expressed strong opposition to the decision.

In the statements that led to the investigation, Ertürk had reportedly said, "Look, the government will change now. Whether it's painful or not, the government will change. Therefore, everyone should come to their senses. You, me... Of course, everyone... We expect the Supreme Election Council to make decisions according to conscience and law. Otherwise, I think we will face difficulties as a country."

The indictment has been sent to the Bakırköy Assize Court for further proceedings. The case highlights concerns about freedom of expression and the potential legal repercussions for statements made in public forums in Turkey.
