Seongnam Mayor: Redevelopment and reconstruction will transform the city, boosting advanced industries and transportation

Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin is accelerating urban regeneration, focusing on redevelopment and reconstruction to make the city's transformation palpable for residents. He aims to be remembered as the mayor who "definitively changed Seongnam" by integrating these projects with the expansion of high-tech industries, transportation networks, and essential living infrastructure.

We will proceed with redevelopment and reconstruction at a rapid pace so that citizens can directly experience the changes in Seongnam.

The mayor highlighted that urban regeneration is moving beyond planning into execution. Key projects like the Sujin 1 district, which will feature 4,844 housing units and 216 officetels, have completed management disposition plans and will begin relocation next month. Other districts, including Taepyeong 1, Eunhaeng 1, and Geumgwang 2, are targeted for urban regeneration designation by the first quarter of next year. Reconstruction efforts in the Bundang district are also being expedited through reasonable adjustments to public contribution requirements and streamlined approval processes.

Shin envisions Seongnam as a "diamond-shaped advanced industry belt," connecting existing hubs like Pangyo Techno Valley with new developments such as the 4th Techno Valley at Ori Station, the Baegyeon MICE complex, and the Yatop Valley urban advanced industrial complex. This strategy aims to create a future city that attracts businesses and talent, building upon the success of Pangyo's existing techno valleys, which host 1,780 companies and 83,465 employees, generating 226.3 trillion won in revenue.

Urban regeneration is not just about building new houses. We must link it with advanced industries, transportation networks, and living infrastructure to enhance urban competitiveness.

Transportation is identified as a cornerstone of urban development, with a goal for residents to access subways within 15 minutes. The mayor is pushing for the extension of Subway Line 8 to Pangyo and further to Pochi, alongside the Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railway connecting Seoul's Sports Complex Station to Seongnam, Yongin, Suwon, and Hwaseong. New station developments are also planned.

The 4th Techno Valley is the core growth engine that will be responsible for Seongnam's next 30 years.

Beyond infrastructure, the city is focusing on youth employment and welfare. The "Baby Fund Project" will provide 1 million won in seed money to newborns, and the "In-Home End-of-Life Care" program will support residents wishing to spend their final days at home. Efforts to combat odors in older districts through the "Clean Sewer Project" are also underway, aiming to improve living conditions by overhauling aging sewer lines.

The most crucial welfare for young people is good jobs. We will increase quality jobs centered around Pangyo and the 4th Techno Valley and strengthen the startup ecosystem.
