Seoul's Gangnam Area to See First Public Housing in 15 Years; Suripul District to Supply 20,000 Homes by 2029

Seoul's southern Gangnam district is set to receive its first large-scale public housing development in 15 years with the Suripul district project. The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has established a dedicated "Seoul Suripul Business Group" to accelerate the development, aiming to supply the first homes by 2029, a year earlier than initially planned.

The specialized project team, led by a senior project manager, will integrate compensation and land planning operations. This move is intended to shorten the overall project timeline by improving coordination between compensation and district planning, and minimizing delays between stages from district designation to construction.

The Seoul Suripul District is a leading project of very high policy importance, and we plan to drastically shorten the authorization and compensation procedures through the establishment of a dedicated organization.

The Suripul district project, located in Wonji, Shinwon, and Yeomgok-dong in Seocho District, will create a public housing complex on land previously designated as a development-restricted zone. LH plans to supply 20,000 homes in the area. The larger Suripul 1 district, planned for 18,000 homes on 2.02 million square meters, has already received official designation from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. However, the Suripul 2 district, intended for 2,000 homes on 190,000 square meters, faces delays due to local resident opposition.

LH acting president Cho Kyung-sook emphasized the project's high policy importance and stated that the dedicated team will significantly shorten approval and compensation processes. She pledged to deliver tangible housing supply results based on on-site expertise.
