  • Serbia and the European Union are expected to abolish roaming charges by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
  • This will allow Serbian mobile users to use their domestic plans in EU countries without extra costs, applying the 'roaming as at home' principle.
  • The move requires bilateral agreements between the EU and Western Balkan countries, followed by legal implementation for all operators.

Roaming charges between Serbia and the European Union are likely to be abolished by the end of 2026 or early 2027, according to Vladimir Luฤiฤ‡, General Director of Telekom Serbia. This development follows the European Commission's plan to sign agreements with Western Balkan countries, paving the way for legal implementation.

Luฤiฤ‡ explained that the "roaming as at home" rule will apply, enabling Serbian mobile users to utilize their domestic tariffs and packages in EU countries without incurring additional costs. "This means that a package you have in Serbia can be used anywhere, in the same way as at home. If you have, for example, 1 GB of internet, you use it under the same conditions abroad, without additional charges or worrying about the network you are connected to," Luฤiฤ‡ told RTS.

The EU has had a similar system in place since 2017, which initially included member states, Liechtenstein, and Norway, and later expanded to include Ukraine and Moldova. The next step involves the EU signing bilateral agreements with each of the Western Balkan states. Luฤiฤ‡ expressed optimism that this will happen soon, after which the roaming rules will be integrated into national laws, making them binding for all operators.

Telekom operators in Europe are already technically prepared for this service. Additionally, a smaller joint roaming zone already exists among Western Balkan countries. Luฤiฤ‡ emphasized that the abolition of roaming will benefit all users and all tariff packages without exception. "This is a major step forward as it becomes a legal obligation for all operators in Europe to allow the use of packages under the same conditions as in the home country," he concluded.
