Serbia: Indictment Against Citizen for Fighting in Ukraine Welcomed

Serbia's Forum for Security and Democracy (FBD) has lauded the indictment of a Serbian citizen accused of participating in the war in Ukraine as a mercenary for the Russian army. The Belgrade Centre for Security and Democracy views this legal action as a significant step in addressing the involvement of its nationals in foreign conflicts.

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced on August 24 that it had filed an indictment against Miloš N., 40, on suspicion of engaging in the war and armed conflict on Ukrainian territory. He is alleged to have acted as a member of a Russian military formation, despite not being a Russian citizen or part of an official international mission involving Serbia.

FBD highlighted the symbolic timing of the indictment's announcement, coinciding with Ukraine's Independence Day. The organization noted that news of the indictment resonated in neighboring Balkan states, sometimes receiving more media attention than within Serbia itself. This underscores the regional implications of Serbian nationals fighting abroad.

The Forum recalled its previous advocacy for identifying and sanctioning individuals fighting for the Russian aggressor in Ukraine, emphasizing the relevance of such actions to both domestic and regional security discussions. In light of current political tensions and concerns about potential post-election unrest in Serbia, FBD pointed to past instances where former mercenaries fighting for Russia in Ukraine were observed among individuals involved in protests in Belgrade, allegedly directing insults and threats at student demonstrators.
