Serbia to subsidize citizens returning from abroad, president says

President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia has announced a new government initiative to provide subsidies for citizens returning from abroad. The program aims to incentivize Serbians living overseas to come back and contribute to their homeland's progress, with Vučić noting that while retirees are a significant group returning, younger families are also part of the trend.

Speaking during a visit to the Regional Training Center for Dual Lifelong Education in Svilajnac, Vučić emphasized the importance of retaining talent and skills within Serbia. The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage national pride and development through the return of its diaspora.

In a separate but related announcement, Vučić also addressed concerns about the future of the Morava thermal power plant. He assured workers that their jobs would be protected, stating his commitment to preventing its closure despite external pressures, including from the World Bank and IMF, which he claims are pushing for its shutdown. Vučić asserted that the plant is vital for the livelihoods of its employees and their families, and he will resist calls for its closure.
