Serbian Bar President: Police Must Solve Lawyer Attacks, Safety at Risk

Dušan Bratić, President of the Bar Association of Serbia (AKS), asserted that the police possess the capability to resolve recent attacks against lawyers, stating it is merely a matter of willingness. He called for the consistent and proper application of the law.

Police are capable and can shed light on both, still unsolved events, the attack on colleague Miloš Pavlović and the attack on colleague Danko Cvejić and another citizen who was attacked at the same time as him.

Bratić specifically mentioned the attacks on colleagues Miloš Pavlović and Danko Cvejić, as well as another citizen attacked simultaneously with Cvejić, emphasizing that these cases remain unsolved. He indicated that the AKS's future reactions would be contingent upon the outcomes of these investigations.

"No one in this country can feel safe if an organized group attacks a man in broad daylight, endangers his life, leaves the scene in New Belgrade, and this case has gone unsolved for days," Bratić stated. He suggested this situation indicates issues within parts of the state administration, specifically the police.

Earlier, on July 7, Bratić had sent a letter to Police Director Dragan Vasiljević, requesting an urgent response to the recent assaults on lawyers. He expressed expectations that these cases would be given the highest priority and that the public would be kept informed about the progress of the measures taken, within the bounds of the criminal proceedings. The AKS pledged to continue monitoring the actions of relevant authorities in all cases where lawyers are victims of criminal acts and to take necessary measures to protect the safety of the legal profession based on the results.
