Serbian prosecutors seek to identify and prosecute groups linked to student plenum

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade is actively pursuing the identification and prosecution of individuals involved in a student plenum held on January 22, 2025. Prosecutor Miodrag Marković stated that the office has requested assistance from the Service for Combating Terrorism to gather information and confirm the identities of those implicated. The focus is on four distinct groups of people connected to the event, where a "sound cannon" was reportedly mentioned.

Marković detailed the categorization of these groups. The first group comprises the organizers and participants whose identities are still unknown. The second group consists of individuals who coordinated the movement of the assembled crowd during a protest on March 15, 2025. The third group includes those who provided media support, disseminating claims about the "sound cannon" on social media and in other media outlets; the identities of many in this group are already known. The fourth group will consist of individuals who attended mass medical examinations for protest participants a few days after the event.

"Once we uncover their identities, all will be prosecuted, no one will get away," Marković asserted. He also noted that the First Basic Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated a case concerning injuries allegedly caused by the "sound cannon," and the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office has requested that this case be transferred to them. This indicates a deepening investigation into the specific allegations related to the device.

Further complicating the investigation, documentation from a plenum meeting of the organization "Students in Blockade" from January 22, 2025, was temporarily seized during an investigation into a student's death at the Faculty of Philosophy on March 27, 2026. Marković indicated that this extensive documentation, studied from late March until recently, directly mentions the "sound cannon" two months prior to the March 15 protest. The prosecutor suggested that this document, along with another detailing procedures like signal for stewards to remove vests, points to a simulation of the "sound cannon's" use. The mention of "a greasy response from Brussels" in the document also suggests political implications surrounding the event.
