Serres: Two women arrested over €16,000 scam targeting 70-year-old woman

Two women, aged 20 and 26, were arrested in Serres after allegedly defrauding a 70-year-old woman through the so-called “accountant” method.

A suspected accomplice telephoned the woman while posing as her accountant. The caller allegedly told her that the tax authorities needed an inventory of the money and jewelry in her home. The woman gathered €11,010 in cash and jewelry worth about €5,000 and placed them in a bag.

Following instructions given over the phone, she left the bag at a specified location. One of the women allegedly arrived shortly afterward and collected it. Neighbors noticed unusual activity in the area and alerted police.

Officers located one of the women and found the stolen money and jewelry in her possession. The property was returned to the victim. Police found the second woman nearby, where she was allegedly waiting for her accomplice. Officers also seized two mobile phones.

The two arrested women will be brought before the Serres prosecutor with the case file prepared against them.
