Seven Victims Identified in Hungary Bus Crash; Repatriation of Injured to Begin

Seven victims of a fatal bus crash on Hungary's M3 highway have been identified, paving the way for the repatriation of injured passengers. The bus, carrying 57 Polish pilgrims and two drivers, veered off the road and overturned into a ditch near Mezőkeresztes early Sunday morning. The accident claimed the lives of twelve people.

Polish police and prosecutors have arrived in Hungary to collaborate with local authorities in investigating the circumstances of the tragedy. Initial findings suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The injured were transported to hospitals in Miskolc, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, and Eger, with Polish medical teams and air rescue services on standby to receive the severely injured.

Emergency services deployed 14 ambulance units to the scene, where they treated one critically injured, nine severely injured, and 37 lightly injured individuals. Firefighters worked to free people trapped under the overturned bus, with heavy-duty cranes later used to right the vehicle. A witness, composer Skinti Csaba, described arriving shortly after the crash, seeing numerous emergency vehicles and people near the wreckage before the highway was fully closed.
