Several days of unstable weather, rain and gusts of up to 50 km/h are approaching Buenos Aires

A brief break from the cold in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area will give way to another sharp change in the weather later this week.

Winds from the north will gradually lift temperatures after a cold start to the week, bringing readings closer to normal September levels. The improvement will be temporary. A sudestada is expected to develop between Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, over the metropolitan area and the Río de la Plata region.

Conditions will deteriorate on Friday as the sky turns from mostly cloudy to overcast and southeasterly winds strengthen. Isolated rain could begin in the afternoon, with totals of up to 10 millimeters. Gusts may reach between 35 and 50 kilometers per hour, especially from the afternoon into the night. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 16°C and 17°C.

The persistent southeasterly wind could also cause a significant rise in the Río de la Plata. Authorities and residents will therefore watch water levels, particularly along the riverfront and in areas that are usually vulnerable to flooding. The weather effects on temperatures are expected to continue at least until the start of next week.

Before the sudestada arrives, Buenos Aires is expected to experience several warmer days. Monday’s high is forecast at 14°C. Tuesday should remain fair, with temperatures from 7°C to 18°C in the city. Cloud cover and some instability could increase on Wednesday afternoon and evening, although the chance of rain remains very low. The warmest conditions are expected Thursday, when temperatures could approach 20°C.
