Severe weather triggers dozens of emergency callouts in Saxony

Storms and heavy rain sent police, firefighters and emergency crews to dozens of incidents across Saxony, with Dresden and nearby districts recording more than 50 callouts by 9:36 p.m.

Strong wind gusts brought down trees and branches in Dresden, blocking roads and damaging several cars. In Cossebaude, crews used an aerial ladder to remove a large branch that had fallen onto a power line. A tree completely collapsed onto two parked cars in Übigau, while another fell onto a car in Cotta.

The number of emergency calls rose sharply during the evening, prompting officials to bring additional staff into Dresden’s emergency coordination center. More incidents were reported during the night. No one was injured in the Dresden-area storm response.

Heavy rain also caused a serious crash on the A4 between Erfurt and Dresden near Hainichen. At about 8 p.m., a 28-year-old driver lost control on the wet road and hit a motorhome. The motorhome then struck the guardrail and overturned. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries, while the motorhome driver was seriously injured.

Both vehicles had to be recovered by crane. The Dresden-bound carriageway remained completely closed until 11 p.m., after which one of its three lanes reopened. Police estimated the damage at about 91,000 euros.
