SGF reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to stronger ties with Serbia

Nigeria is committed to enhancing its diplomatic and economic relationship with Serbia, according to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Serbia.

Akume conveyed this commitment during a courtesy visit from Serbian Ambassador Jugoslav Vukadinović to his office in Abuja. The meeting aimed to deepen bilateral relations, focusing on boosting trade, investment, infrastructure development, and economic cooperation, aligning with Nigeria's foreign policy objectives.

The SGF described the relationship between Nigeria and Serbia as one built on decades of mutual respect, shared interests, and diplomatic cooperation. This enduring connection dates back to Nigeria's independence in 1960, when Serbia was part of the former Yugoslavia. Both nations also shared close ties through the Non-Aligned Movement, where Yugoslavia was a founding member and Nigeria played a significant role.

Ambassador Vukadinović echoed these sentiments, calling the relationship "historic and enduring." He noted that Serbia, as the successor state to Yugoslavia, has maintained cordial ties with Nigeria since its independence. He recalled Yugoslavia as one of Nigeria's earliest international partners and highlighted their shared history within the Non-Aligned Movement.

Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Vukadinović described the relationship between Nigeria and Serbia as historic and enduring, noting that Serbia, as the successor state of the former Yugoslavia, has maintained cordial ties with Nigeria since the country’s independence in 1960.

Over the years, Serbian companies have contributed to several significant infrastructure projects across Nigeria, underscoring the practical dimension of their bilateral cooperation.
