Shanghai Red Pandas to Arrive in Taipei This Weekend, Mayor Cites Forum Success

Taipei is set to welcome two red pandas from Shanghai this weekend, a development Mayor Chiang Wan-an described as a concrete achievement stemming from the cross-strait city forum. The pandas, originally a proposal from Chiang's first visit to Shanghai in 2023, will arrive after navigating various administrative and quarantine procedures.

The red pandas from Shanghai will come to Taiwan this weekend, but they will still need to undergo a month of quarantine.

Chiang confirmed the pandas' expected arrival on Saturday, followed by a mandatory one-month quarantine period. He emphasized the significance of this exchange for the Taipei Zoo, noting its importance for species propagation and genetic diversity. The mayor also sees the animal exchange as an opportunity to further children's understanding of life education.

Addressing concerns about potential bureaucratic hurdles, Chiang assured that all necessary approvals from both local and central government quarantine authorities have been secured. He contrasted this tangible outcome with criticisms from some political figures who have questioned the forum's value, asserting that the red panda arrival demonstrates the forum's practical benefits.
