Shashank Koirala rises as Nepali Congress faction's new coordinator

A recent Supreme Court order has injected new energy into a faction of the Nepali Congress that stands in opposition to the party's current establishment. This development, however, has also led to a subtle but significant shift in the faction's internal power dynamics, with Dr. Shashank Koirala now stepping into the role of its political coordinator.

The faction convened a three-day national gathering in Kathmandu from August 14 to 16. This meeting served as a platform to showcase the group's strength, particularly following the Supreme Court's decision to review a dispute within the party. Former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, returning to Nepal just before the gathering, lent considerable weight to the event as its chief guest.

While Deuba's presence was a welcome sight for senior leaders of the non-establishment faction, the most consequential change was observed in the role of Purna Bahadur Khadka. Khadka, a long-time loyalist of Deuba, had been the primary figure leading the faction's activities during Deuba's absence from active politics. Initially hesitant to attend the gathering, fearing it might signal a party split, Khadka agreed to participate after receiving assurances that unity would be preserved.

However, the gathering's concluding decisions effectively reshaped the faction's leadership structure. It was decided that Koirala would spearhead the group's activities leading up to the 15th General Convention, operating under Deuba's guidance. This places Koirala in the faction's second-in-command position, a significant elevation from Khadka's previous central role in organizing meetings and legal processes.
