Sheinbaum announces comprehensive plan to improve water supply in Ecatepec, highlights rehabilitation of 24 wells

Claudia Sheinbaum presented water access in Ecatepec as a problem her government is now trying to repair with an ambitious, nearly 25 billion-peso project. The announcement came after she was asked about a Supreme Court ruling requiring authorities to guarantee at least 100 liters of drinking water for 600 residents in Ecatepec’s fifth zone.

At her Thursday morning press conference, Sheinbaum said the National Water Commission, led by Efraín Morales, had already rehabilitated 24 water wells in the municipality. The president emphasized coordination among Mexico State Governor Delfina Gómez, the federal government and municipal authorities, particularly Ecatepec Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss. She said the eastern part of the Mexico City metropolitan area has long faced water problems and blamed earlier Institutional Revolutionary Party administrations in Mexico State for abandoning the area.

Sheinbaum linked the water shortage to broader inequality in Mexico State, where about 10 million people live close to Mexico City, one of the country’s largest wealth-generating entities. She said many communities expanded without hospitals, schools, universities or upper-secondary schools, while resources were not directed toward water services, paving or street lighting because of corruption and other uses of public funds. Her government, she said, is working to address that inherited shortfall through pipeline and well rehabilitation and a new redistribution of drinking water. The plan is expected to improve supplies in Ecatepec and in the Mexico City districts of Iztapalapa, Gustavo A. Madero and Tlalpan, where infrastructure remains insufficient.
