Sheinbaum asks prosecutors to reveal fuel-smuggling network linked to Farías Laguna case

Claudia Sheinbaum wants Mexico’s prosecutors to show how the alleged fuel-smuggling network tied to former rear admiral Fernando Farías Laguna was built and operated.

Speaking at her morning press conference at the National Palace on Wednesday, Sept. 2, the president said the case belongs to the Attorney General’s Office, or FGR. Farías Laguna has been placed under prosecution for his alleged links to a criminal network involved in fuel smuggling, the movement of illicit proceeds and fuel distribution.

Sheinbaum said she had asked prosecutors to present, as far as the judicial proceedings allow, how the network was assembled and how members of the Navy coordinated the fuel-smuggling operation. She also referred to former Navy Secretary Rafael Ojeda’s decision to report the matter to federal prosecutors, as well as the initial investigations and arrests carried out under former Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero.

It would be very good if it were presented, as far as possible within the judicial proceedings, how that network was built, and how these people who belonged to the Navy coordinated this fuel-smuggling network.

She said the investigations had continued under current Attorney General Ernestina Godoy. “It is very important that this becomes known so people can see that there is nothing to hide, absolutely nothing,” Sheinbaum said, calling the arrests that have taken place positive. She added that Ojeda could be summoned if necessary.

Sheinbaum also said former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador removed fuel-import permits after accusing the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto of issuing them indiscriminately.
