Sheinbaum calls teacher protests ahead of World Cup a 'provocation'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has labeled the protests by teachers blocking streets in the capital as a "provocation," occurring just two days before the North American 2026 World Cup kicks off. The president stated during her regular morning press conference that the demonstrations by the educators, who have maintained a camp near the central Zócalo plaza's 'Fan Fest,' are difficult to understand.

A dissident group from the education union, CNTE, has been on strike for the past week. They are demanding a salary increase and the repeal of a pension law, measures that the government considers unviable. Sheinbaum has extended an invitation for dialogue and has ruled out using police force to suppress the protests, which have included blocking avenues and even toppling statues related to the World Cup.

The World Cup is scheduled to begin on Thursday and will conclude on July 19, with matches hosted across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The CNTE has announced plans for further demonstrations on Thursday, the same day Mexico faces South Africa in the opening match of the tournament.

President Sheinbaum will not be present at the World Cup's opening ceremony at the Azteca Stadium. While she initially planned to attend the 'Fan Fest' in the Zócalo, near the National Palace, her attendance is now uncertain. "We will see how what is happening with the teachers unfolds," she commented, adding, "I have to be attentive to that."
