Sheinbaum Demands Clarity on Deaths of Mexicans in ICE Custody, Cites 'Non-Repetition'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has strongly reiterated her demand for a thorough clarification of cases involving the deaths of Mexican nationals while in the custody or during operations conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

During a press conference on August 27th at the National Palace, Sheinbaum stated she had instructed Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco to persistently raise this issue with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom he met with in Washington the previous day. "I asked him to insist that we do not agree with the treatment our Mexican brothers are receiving in the United States and that we want clarification for all those who died under these circumstances," Sheinbaum reported.

The President emphasized that her administration consistently supports Mexican citizens both within the United States and globally. "We have not only supported families in filing complaints, but as the Mexican state, we have directly filed complaints with local, state, and federal Justice Departments," she declared. "What we seek is non-repetition, and also respect for the human rights of all migrants in the United States; that is our objective."

Sheinbaum also mentioned that a proposal to declare October 15th as the "Day of Migrant Grandparents" in Mexico is under consideration. This initiative reflects a broader acknowledgment of the contributions and challenges faced by the Mexican diaspora.
