Sheinbaum Inaugurates Power Plant, Declares CFE Strength Means Loving Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum declared that strengthening Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is equivalent to loving the nation. She made these remarks during the inauguration of the "Teresa Urrea Chávez" Combined Cycle Power Plant in Manzanillo, Colima.

Sheinbaum criticized what she described as attempts to privatize the CFE during the "neoliberal period." She contrasted this with the current administration's approach, stating that President López Obrador's government prioritizes the CFE over private entities, which she believes fundamentally changes the strategy for electrical dispatch.

The president asserted that CFE workers are the backbone of the company. "Without the Federal Electricity Commission, there would be no energy sovereignty and no national sovereignty," she stated. "Strengthening the Federal Electricity Commission means loving Mexico. Strengthening the Federal Electricity Commission means strengthening national sovereignty, and that is what we are doing with the inauguration of this plant."

She also mentioned the goal of adding 28,000 megawatts of additional capacity during her six-year term. Energy Secretary Luz Elena González highlighted the plant's role in providing "reliability with firm and more efficient energy," moving towards a more sustainable society. She noted that "years of dismantling" the CFE have been reversed in a short time, with 38 new renewable plants set to begin operation. CFE Director Emilia Esther Calleja described the Manzanillo III plant as a "concrete decision" to expand CFE's generation capacity, strengthen supply in a strategic region, and support the country's economic growth.
