Sheinbaum Lands in New York for World Cup Final; Mexicans Await Her at Hotel

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has arrived in New York City to attend the final match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. She traveled on a military aircraft from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) after her originally scheduled commercial flight was canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Sheinbaum landed at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey at 1:05 AM local time.

The President is reportedly staying at the Kimpton Asbel Hotel in Manhattan, located near Times Square and the Mexican Consulate. Since Saturday night, Mexican citizens and supporters of her political party, Morena, have gathered outside the hotel, holding Mexican flags and banners to welcome her arrival. Videos circulating on social media show the enthusiastic reception.

Sheinbaum accepted a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. She explained on Friday that she considered the invitation a politically significant gesture between the host countries of the tournament. Her presence in the United States comes at a time of ongoing T-MEC trade negotiations, adding a layer of potential political importance to the event.

While a bilateral or trilateral meeting between Sheinbaum, Trump, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has not been confirmed, their presence at the final has generated expectations regarding the relationship between the T-MEC partner countries and the current trade discussions.
