Sheinbaum rejects Milei's 'anti-Argentine' campaign claims

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has firmly rejected claims made by Argentine President Javier Milei, who accused Mexico and Brazil of financing an "anti-Argentine" campaign. Speaking at her morning press conference on Monday, July 27, Sheinbaum Pardo asserted that her government is not engaged in any such campaign against any nation worldwide.

"It is false. There is no campaign against any country in the world nor against any government in the world," Sheinbaum stated. She countered Milei's accusations by suggesting that, conversely, there are orchestrated attacks against her own government originating from various sources. "What there is, on the contrary, is a campaign orchestrated from many places against our government," she added.

Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's foreign policy principles, stating, "But we do not customarily meddle with other countries. Self-determination of peoples, and we ask for the same, respect." This statement directly addresses Milei's allegations and reaffirms Mexico's commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations.

The diplomatic tension escalated after Milei referred to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a "thief" and a "prisoner" during a political rally. This incident prompted Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Argentine ambassador to express "repulsion" and demand explanations for Milei's "aggressions" against Lula da Silva. The exchange has significantly strained relations between the two South American neighbors, with Mexico now drawn into the dispute.
