Sheinbaum rules out known probes into “Andy” and Adán Augusto López over fuel smuggling allegations

President Claudia Sheinbaum said she has been informed of no investigation into Senator Adán Augusto López or Andrés Manuel “Andy” López Beltrán over alleged fuel smuggling, known in Mexico as huachicol fiscal.

Speaking at a morning news conference on Friday, September 4, Sheinbaum said López Beltrán is not a public servant. Regarding López, who previously served as interior secretary, she said she was not aware of any investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.

“There are no investigations, as far as the Attorney General’s Office has informed us, and the Attorney General’s Office has to report,” Sheinbaum said. She added that several investigative lines had already been discussed publicly and that any statement made by a witness would need to be assessed for validity and supporting evidence.

Asked whether the Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Government was investigating either man, Sheinbaum again said López Beltrán did not hold public office. She said the agency’s secretary, Raquel Buenrostro, could provide information if necessary.

Sheinbaum recalled that the Navy itself reported the fuel-smuggling case, which was connected to earlier investigations by former Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero. She also referred to the arrest of former PAN governor Ernesto Ruffo Appel on alleged fuel-smuggling grounds and mentioned stronger maritime and land border controls.
