Sheinbaum Tells New Military Cadets to Put Mexico Above Personal Interests: “They Are Servants of the Nation”

President Claudia Sheinbaum told a new generation of cadets that the military uniform represents the trust of Mexican society. She urged them to place the national interest above personal interests and to build their careers on honesty, discipline and loyalty to the people.

Sheinbaum made the remarks during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Heroic Military College’s campus in Tlalpan. Addressing members of the armed forces, legislators and federal officials, she said cadets would become not only military professionals but, above all, “servants of the nation.”

She said military training must be accompanied by principles, and that authority must be exercised responsibly and with respect for human dignity. “Remember always that the uniform you wear represents the trust of the people of Mexico, and that trust is answered with preparation, honesty, discipline and loyalty,” she said.

Referring to episodes in Mexico’s history and to the principles of sovereignty, independence and social justice, Sheinbaum invoked insurgent leader Vicente Guerrero and the phrase “The homeland comes first.” She said the principle belongs to all Mexicans and reflects the spirit carried by the Military College through successive generations.

The president also highlighted the armed forces’ role in national defense, security and development, as well as their work assisting people during earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and other emergencies. She said the uniform should be understood not merely as an institutional distinction, but as a symbol of the responsibility its wearer assumes toward society. “Force must be at the service of peace,” she said.
