Sheinbaum tells U.S. ambassador to respect Mexico's internal affairs

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson to respect Mexico's internal affairs and limit his role to bilateral coordination. She stated that while collaboration on shared issues like organized crime is welcome, ambassadors should refrain from commenting on domestic political matters.

"It is very important also, I say respectfully, to remember that it is important for ambassadors to stay on the topic of coordination and collaboration. Ambassadors must be respectful of the internal political affairs of countries," Sheinbaum said during her Tuesday morning press conference.

She reiterated that Mexican foreign policy is guided by principles of self-determination and non-intervention. Sheinbaum noted that Mexican diplomats abroad do not comment on the internal politics of their host countries and expects the same standard to apply to U.S. representatives in Mexico.

This statement follows comments by Ambassador Johnson, who suggested that the fight against drug cartels should be a joint effort and not a political debate, a day after Sheinbaum's accountability report where she called for Mexicans to defend national sovereignty.
