Sheinbaum warns of foreign lies, calls to defend Mexico's maritime sovereignty

President Claudia Sheinbaum marked Mexico's National Navy Day by calling for a robust defense of national sovereignty against external threats and disinformation. Speaking aboard the ship Usumacinta at the Port Lázaro Cárdenas in Michoacán, she urged members of the Navy and National Defense secretariats to stand firm against foreign interests and "campaigns of lies and hatred."

During the ceremony, Sheinbaum bestowed honors, including flagging 16 dredgers, a sargassum collection vessel, and a merchant ship. She administered the oath of office to their captains and presented the Mexican flag to the motor vessel Mar Azteca. She also presented a decoration to 20 naval and merchant marine personnel.

Navy Secretary Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles echoed the president's sentiments, detailing structural reforms within the dependency aimed at strengthening the nation's maritime presence and control. He noted the creation of a new naval operations command and a sub-secretariat for maritime and port affairs, emphasizing their role in safeguarding national sovereignty. Morales Ángeles also highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas for Mexico's future maritime and commercial development.
