Sheinbaum watches Mexico's World Cup opener with fans

While the world's attention focused on the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony at the Mexico City Stadium, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo chose a different venue: the Deportivo Hermanos Galeana. Far from official protocols and speculation about her whereabouts, the President mingled with fans to watch Mexico's debut match against South Africa.

Families had gathered at the sports complex since midday, creating a festive atmosphere with green jerseys, flags, and snacks. The focus was on the game and the Mexican team's responsibility to open the tournament on home soil. Sheinbaum, wearing a Mexico jersey with the number 26, walked through the venue before kickoff, greeting attendees and speaking with Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina and local mayor Janecarlo Lozano.

During the national anthem, the President stood and sang with the crowd. Throughout the match, she alternated between watching the screen and her phone, briefly stepping away for a call as protests occurred elsewhere. The atmosphere at Hermanos Galeana, however, remained focused on the World Cup excitement.

The tension of the game turned into celebration with Julián Quiñones's ninth-minute goal, prompting a collective outburst. Sheinbaum and Brugada Molina waved a Mexican flag as fans celebrated the goal that ignited World Cup hopes. In the second half, Sheinbaum again approached attendees during a break, greeting many people.

Raúl Jiménez's 67th-minute goal sealed Mexico's victory, the team's first in a World Cup opening match. Surrounded by children, Sheinbaum celebrated the decisive goal. She left the complex smiling and shaking hands, later summarizing the day on social media: "Congratulations to the National Team! Congratulations to all Mexicans."

Mexico won on the field, and the President chose to experience the victory from the heart of the citizens' stands.
