Shipwreck in Paracas Bay: Two fishermen disappear amid strong waves

Two artisanal fishermen remain missing after their vessel capsized in the Bay of Paracas, Ica region, Peru. The accident occurred early in the morning amidst heavy surf, according to local sources. A third crew member survived the incident and received assistance from fishermen in the area.

Civil Defense reported that the capsizing was caused by strong waves affecting the coastline, which is currently under an active alert until June 11. The sudden rise in sea levels reportedly caught the fishing boat's occupants by surprise while they were at sea, leading to the emergency. The artisanal boat, identified as 'Carlitos,' was navigating in a high-risk area known for its treacherous rocks and cliffs.

Search and rescue operations are being conducted by the Port Authority, Civil Defense, and artisanal fishermen's guilds. Teams are scouring the sea and coastline for the missing individuals. Officials attribute the anomalous wave activity to oceanic conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which is causing unusual sea behavior and increasing risks for artisanal fishing activities along the coast.
