Should Switzerland Prioritize Domestic Tech Firms for Digital Services? Debate Ignites in Bern

Switzerland is initiating a significant debate on potentially favoring its own technology companies in public procurement of digital services. The move aims to bolster the domestic tech sector and decrease the nation's dependence on major American tech firms.

National councilor Sophie Michaud Gigon, a member of the Green Party, is set to present a motion to this effect in Bern next week. She argues that Switzerland, while lacking a Silicon Valley, possesses strong technology companies and numerous smaller firms with promising digital services. Michaud Gigon believes the public sector, which spends hundreds of millions of francs annually, often on U.S. services, should instead support Swiss businesses.

"This is a new step after several unsuccessful political attempts to get things moving," Michaud Gigon stated. "It's about exerting pressure on the Confederation, and above all, aligning the strategic framework it defined in 2025 with its own digital purchases." She emphasized the need for concrete action to achieve the digital sovereignty goals Bern has espoused for years.

The proposal, supported by Infomaniak and Proton, seeks to encourage the public sector to prioritize purchases not only within Switzerland but also within the European Union. This initiative could provide a substantial boost to Swiss tech companies and foster greater national digital independence.
