Shrek's Donkey to star in solo film 'Donkey' set for 2028 release

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures are bringing the beloved, talkative Donkey from the Shrek franchise to the big screen with his own solo film. Titled 'Donkey,' the spin-off is slated for a worldwide cinema release on June 30, 2028.

The movie promises to take audiences on a journey into Donkey's past, exploring how he gained his ability to speak and detailing his life before his fateful encounter with the ogre Shrek. The character first captured audiences' hearts in the original Shrek film, particularly in Latin America where Eugenio Derbez's voice performance became iconic.

Eddie Murphy, the original English voice of Donkey, is confirmed to reprise his role. While a voice actor for the Latin American Spanish dub has not yet been officially announced, there is strong anticipation that Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez will return. Derbez had previously expressed a desire for more creative freedom in his dubbing work, which is believed to have been a factor in his return for 'Shrek 5'.

Reports suggest the film will also delve into Donkey's unusual family, including his wife, Dragon, and their half-donkey, half-dragon offspring. Directed by Charlie Bean and produced by Rebecca Huntley, with Matt Flynn as co-director, 'Donkey' aims to recapture the humor and charisma that made the character a fan favorite.
