Shymkent Faces Invasion of Snakes and Scorpions

Rescuers in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, are operating under heightened alert due to a dramatic increase in snake and scorpion sightings within the city. Over the last two months, the municipal rescue service has fielded more than 130 calls concerning reptiles appearing in residential areas, successfully capturing approximately 90 of them. This figure significantly surpasses the roughly 200 calls received for the entire previous year.

Specialists explain that snakes are frequently observed venturing into urban environments in search of food, and they are increasingly being found on private properties, in residential neighborhoods, parks, and green spaces. "Snakes are most often found where there are mice and birds, since that is what they feed on," stated Yerbol Ospanov, head of a department at the Shymkent Department of Emergency Situations. He added that numerous snake species, both venomous and non-venomous, inhabit the city, advising residents to maintain a safe distance and await professional assistance if a snake is spotted.

While there have been no reported incidents of snake bites thus far, scorpions pose a more immediate threat, having already attacked 80 individuals. Authorities are strongly advising residents to exercise increased vigilance and adhere to safety precautions, particularly during walks and other outdoor recreational activities.
