Sigur Makes Hajduk History in World Cup Knockout Debut

Niko Kristian Sigur has made history for Hajduk Split, becoming the first player from the Croatian club to participate in a FIFA World Cup knockout stage match while not representing Croatia or the former Yugoslavia. Sigur achieved this milestone during Canada's 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 of the ongoing World Cup.

The midfielder played the full 87 minutes of the match. Despite the loss, which saw Canada become the first host nation to be eliminated from the tournament, Sigur's appearance marked a significant personal achievement and a unique entry in Hajduk's records. Morocco secured their quarter-final spot with goals from Azzedine Ounahi and Soufiane Rahimi.

Born in Canada, Sigur was eligible to play for Croatia and had indeed represented the country at the U21 level. However, he ultimately opted to play for his birth nation, Canada, at the senior international level. This match against Morocco was his 23rd appearance for Canada, during which he has also scored two goals.

Sigur's future at Hajduk Split has been a subject of transfer speculation, with Transfermarkt valuing him at four million euros. His performance on the world stage could further increase interest from other clubs.
