Singapore Bus Arrival System Down Due to Technical Glitch

Commuters in Singapore faced inconvenience on Tuesday morning, July 14, as the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) bus Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) system became unavailable on the MyTransport.SG app. The outage prevented passengers from checking when their buses would arrive.

A notification within the app at 6:15 am stated, "We are currently experiencing technical issues with displaying bus arrival timings. However, bus services are operating as normal." The LTA apologized for the disruption and assured users that efforts were underway to resolve the problem.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar disruption on April 18, when inaccurate bus timings and long wait times were displayed. That outage was attributed to damaged fiber-optic cables during construction for the North-South Corridor project. Asia Piling Co, a subcontractor, was identified as having damaged several fiber-optic cables, one of which was crucial for transmitting data to the ETA server.

In May, Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow had mentioned that the LTA's bus ETA system was undergoing upgrades to prevent future disruptions. LTA's investigation into the April incident found no other hardware or software malfunctions. The system was eventually restored to full functionality after the damaged cable was repaired. This latest outage, however, raises fresh concerns about the reliability of the bus ETA system.
