Singer Papi Urhobo dies after severe illness

Nigerian singer Stephen “Papi Urhobo” Ebihor has died after a severe illness, according to Urhobo Worldwide, a digital platform that promotes Urhobo heritage, music, traditions and unity. The platform announced his death in a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday.

It did not say when he died or disclose details about the illness. It also urged fans and the public not to circulate unverified information, especially about his death or burial arrangements. The family will announce the burial date and other details in an official statement, the platform said.

The circumstances of his death remained unclear. In an Instagram video posted on July 29, Papi Urhobo said he had suffered an accident that left him with a cracked bone and unable to walk. He appealed for financial help to pay for surgery, saying treatment would help him walk again. In a second video posted on August 2, he thanked people who had contributed to his medical expenses.

His wife also sought help with the cost of medical examinations required before the surgery. She said doctors needed a scan or X-ray before the hospital could admit him for the procedure.

Papi Urhobo became widely known for his distinctive vocals on Timaya’s 2007 hit “Ogologomma,” from the album “True Story.” The Delta State-born musician developed a reputation for his powerful voice and contributions to early Nigerian dancehall and Afropop recordings, incorporating elements of his Urhobo musical heritage into contemporary Nigerian rhythms.
