Six killed in Delhi building collapse, rescuers search through rubble

At least six people died after a building used to house students collapsed in Delhi, while rescuers searched through piles of bricks and broken concrete for anyone still trapped.

The building stood in the southern part of the Indian capital, near colleges and universities. Local media reported that it had a basement and five upper floors.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said six people rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital were in stable condition. Police and local residents joined rescuers at the site as the search continued.

"It is certain that there was water in the building's basement, and due to accumulation of water, due to ongoing repair work, the old building collapsed," Gupta told reporters. Police were searching for the owner, television channels reported.

Building collapses occur frequently in India, particularly in crowded urban neighborhoods where unauthorized construction is widespread and enforcement is weak.
