Six-story student dormitory collapses in New Delhi

A six-story dormitory near a university in New Delhi collapsed on Sept. 6, with about 50 students reportedly inside the building.

Residents, police and firefighters quickly began rescue efforts. By the morning of Sept. 7, rescuers had found seven students in the rubble and taken them to hospital. Some students were also reported to be shouting for help from beneath the debris.

More than 12 fire engines, ambulances and disaster-management teams were involved. Machinery was being used to clear the rubble as the operation continued.

The cause of the collapse had not been identified. The Delhi government and security authorities were giving close attention to securing the site and speeding up relief efforts.
