Six-year-old Rohingya child killed in camp gunfight

A six-year-old Rohingya child was killed and his mother wounded during a violent two-hour gunfight between two armed groups at a refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar. The child, identified as Mohammad Yusuf, was shot in the head while in his mother's arms, and his mother, Tahera Begum, sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Members of the Nabi Hossain group joined the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), while members of the ARA sided with the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) and took part in the exchange of fire.

The clash occurred in Camp 8 (East) and reportedly stemmed from a dispute over control of the camp. Police identified the groups involved as members of the Nabi Hossain group aligning with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), and ARA members siding with the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO). The groups exchanged fire from different positions within the camp.

Initially taken to local medical facilities, the injured mother and child were later referred to Chittagong for advanced treatment. Tragically, Yusuf died early this morning while en route to Chittagong. His mother is currently receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

At one point during the two-hour gunfight, Yusuf was shot in the head while in his mother’s arms, leaving him injured. Tahera was also shot at the same time.

Superintendent of Police Riaz Uddin Ahmed confirmed that police responded to the incident and brought the situation under control. He stated that additional security measures have since been put in place to maintain normalcy within the camp.
