Sjöström takes European Championship silver in 50m freestyle

Sarah Sjöström secured her second European Championship medal in Paris, adding a silver to her collection in the 50-meter freestyle event. The Swedish swimming star touched the wall in 23.86 seconds, narrowly missing out on gold by a mere two hundredths of a second to Poland's Katarzyna Wasick.

Sjöström had entered the final as a strong favorite after delivering a top performance in the semifinals, clocking her fastest time since becoming a mother at 23.83 seconds. However, the final proved to be a tight contest, with Wasick, a 34-year-old Polish swimmer, clinching her first long-course championship gold medal.

The bronze medal went to the emerging Italian talent Sara Curtis, who also finished under 24 seconds with a time of 23.99. The atmosphere in the Paris Aquatic Centre was electric, with the home crowd already celebrating Leon Marchand's earlier gold medal win in the 200-meter butterfly.

This silver medal brings Sjöström's total career championship medal count to 98, a remarkable achievement over her 18-year career, the majority of which are gold medals. Despite not securing the top spot, her performance underscores her continued dominance and prowess in the swimming world.
