Šlachta, Válek and Juránek: Parties turn familiar faces into draws for local elections

Several familiar figures from Czech high politics are appearing on candidate lists in South Moravian towns and cities as parties prepare for the autumn local elections. Their names are being used to attract voters at the municipal level.

The lists also show that some leaders who previously represented their parties will not enter the local contest. Their absence creates a contrast with the prominent politicians whose national profiles could help draw attention to municipal campaigns.

According to a political scientist, involving an established politician can bring a party positive points. A well-known candidate may give the local ticket greater visibility and help it compete for votes.

The campaign in South Moravia will therefore feature both familiar national figures and less prominent local candidates, with parties relying on name recognition in some municipalities while other political figures step away from the contest.
