Slovakia's Interior Ministry Cites Lack of Legal Basis for Same-Sex Partnership Registration

Slovakia's Ministry of Interior has stated that it does not possess the legal foundation required to register same-sex partnerships in the official civil registry. This clarification indicates that the current legal framework does not permit the formal recognition of such unions through the existing system.

The ministry intends to communicate this limitation clearly to individuals seeking to register their partnerships. Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka brought attention to this specific issue, underscoring the absence of a legal pathway for these registrations.

The Ministry of Interior does not have a legal basis to register same-sex partnerships in the civil registry.

This situation highlights a legal void in Slovakia concerning the recognition of same-sex partnerships. While the ministry acknowledges the requests, it is bound by the existing legislation, which does not provide for such entries in the civil registry. Consequently, applicants will be informed that their requests cannot be processed under the current legal provisions.
